I have my broker's license and want to become an independent agent in CA. Does anyone have advice on what the first steps are to open your own agency? Thanks!

Hi! Congrats to you! My first suggestion would be to connect yourself with an aggregator (Networked Insurance Agents, Insurance Noodle, SIAA, etc.) to get your feet wet with preferred carriers and build your book of business. Then, I would seek out 1 or 2 experienced wholesalers that will fill up the majority of your needs on the Surplus Lines side of the business. Then, I would go to work and develop a specialty or niche. Happy selling! Carrie M. Carrie's advice is very good, you might find a niche that you like and try to put as much learning and expertise in this area as you build a book of business. Good Luck Red Hollingsworth The Buckner Company 801-631-5202 Cell 801-365-0837 Fx red@buckner.com

We are another group similar to SIAA and others. Your best bet would be to join one of these groups. Market access becomes much easier and eliminates wasted time contracting with a carrier only to find out it's a carrier you really don't need or does not fit your common client base. We have operations going in California and looking to add Branch Partners. If interested...let me know. Good luck in your new endeavors. Chad Norris TWFG Insurance Services www.twfg.net 281-466-1198
