NTL or Non-Trucking Liability is, in most cases, required by the motor carrier with whom the owner/operator has signed a lease agreement. This insurance fills a potential gap for non-business use of the equipment and helps to protect the motor carrier’s primary liability policy.
NTL is not a substitute for primary auto liability. Non-trucking liability is coverage for when an insured is using their truck for NON-BUSINESS purposes. Any personal use between their return, and the next dispatch should be covered under NTL. The motor carrier’s liability policy will cover insureds from the dispatch point, through pick-up and delivery and back to point of origin. It can pay for medical and other expenses associated with injuries to others or damage to other people’s property that the insured causes.
EXCLUSIONS- NTL doesn't apply when you're pulling a loaded trailer, operating on behalf of a trucking company, or using a vehicle for any revenue generating purpose. These types of activities are covered by primary trucking liability insurance.
NTL doesn't provide liability coverage for business use or when hauling any type of cargo. Driving to and from the terminal, fueling up, traveling for maintenance or vehicle servicing, driving during layovers, dead heading (driving without a load), and washing your truck all might be considered using the vehicle for a business purpose.
Lease agreements for terms of 29 days or less, which includes “Trip Leasing” are excluded from coverage.
Ineligible Business Categories: Toters and hotshots, hazardous materials, coal, loggers, towing, livestock, public passenger, livery, private passenger vehicles, personal auto, taxicabs, motorcycle, and emergency vehicles.
