Jhon, by now you are 3 months into the game. How is it going. Have you found the markets you are looking for. I am an independant agent in Fort Worth. Most of my business comes from other retail agents. I can write all lines & have several markets, admitted & non-admitted. Don't turn away any business. If you have something you can not write, send it my way & I will see what I can do to help. My web-site is under construction, but useable. www.execins.com It will give you a better idea of what we can do to help your agency. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at sherrydunn@execins.com or call me at 817-726-0441.

John, Having been in the business for 27 years, starting out as a Farmers Insurance Group Agent in 1982 and becoming independent in 1989, I probably have a very strong and possibly unwelcome opinion on this issue. As an FIG agent I had a District Manager who was supposed to train me and watch over my work. I personally do not feel that the Insurance License immediately entitles a person to become an agency prinicpal (owner). There are just too many complexities involved in the insurance product for this to be realistic. I think that this is what the companies that you have contacted feel as well. While the other posts have given you recommedations on where and how to access markets, and these may work, I feel that you also have an obligation to both your companies and your customers to become knowlegable about insurance. My first recommendation would be to find an agency that you can affiliate yourself with in order to fully learn AND understand the business. I think that you should also begin studies with the Insurance Intitute of America - http://www.aicpcu.org/Programs/Pindex.htm The IIABA http://www.iiaba.net/na/03_Education/05_DesignationCertification/NAV_EDUDesignationCertification?ContentPreference=NA&ActiveState=0&ActiveTab=NA&ContentLevel1=EDUCTN&ContentLevel2=EDUCERTPROG or the Certified Insurance Counselors - http://www.scic.com/. These all have elementary throught advanced studies in insurance. Taking these courses will protect you and your insureds and earning the Designations will help in obtaining other appointments.
