I purchased an agency six months ago that specialized in Health insurance. I am trying to expand it into P&C, both personal and commercial lines. For personal lines, I have lots of H.O. and Auto markets but few clients. I have joined BNI, Rotary, Chamber and local Realtor Association but things are growing slowly I have almost no commercial lines markets and it is hard to get one to sign up since I am so small. Any suggestions? I know that is a broad question but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best of luck in your new venture. My suggestion at this stage is to align yourself with a well-established Wholesaler, as a good number of them have access to standard as well as Surplus Lines markets. Robert L. Hecht | V.P. Where are you in Florida? We have been in business for a few years and have a $2M book and it is still almost impossible to get standard lines commercial in Florida. I would agree with Mr. Hecht. Use a wholesaler, or get a several to submit to. Most of them will be sending you E&S quotes, but they are getting quite competetive and are often the only ones that will write in Southwest Florida.

Building an independent agency in Florida can be a challenge but if you hang in and get good advice and help you can be very successful. I have been building independent agencies in North Florida for over 40 years. Be glad to share my experience if you will contact me. Rod Vaughn Rvaughn@nfan.us

Try networking with Mortgage companies/banks in your area and work on a referral basis with them. Good luck!

Good post Barb .. In fact I have a little white paper about this very technique - Id be very happy to send to anyone interested. It speaks about how some pretty saavy Realtors, Mortgage Brokers and Insurance Agents put their heads together and came up with a excellent and personal touch on a cross referral strategy. Several of Michael Jans Top Performing Quantum Club producers are utilizing it or mild variants of it. Drop a line Steve Aylor stevea@ins-solutions.com
